Race Report: Florida Winter Tour --
Round #2
February 26, 2007
Makos Motorsports continued
its foray into North American karting a week ago as Julius and Matteus Makos
travelled to the kart track outside Homestead-Miami Speedway for the second
round of the 2007 Florida Winter Tour. Despite changing conditions throughout
the weekend, both scored solid results for the second straight round.
After timing 22nd in practice and 18th in morning
warmup, Julius bettered to 16th in Saturday qualifying and cut down even farther
in the prefinal as he crossed 12th in the international field. The young karter
from Richmond Hill, Ontario, then turned his fastest lap of weekend in the main
event as he raced into the top ten before being bumped back to 15th. Back on
track Sunday morning in wet conditions, Julius posted the fastest lap in his
group qualifying session, only to watch the entire 12-kart second group go
quicker on a drying track. Starting 13th, the ten-year-old bettered to 12th in
the prefinal, and in the main event fought in a six-kart pack for tenth,
eventually taking 13th on the day. The points awarded moved Julius forward to
12th in the Winter Tour Championship, and he is now just 18 points out of tenth.
Younger brother Matteus continued to gain
experience in the 60cc Cadet karts in Florida and once again set to bettering
his times over the weekend. He was 23rd on the time sheets Saturday, moved
forward to 20th in the prefinal and in the main event shaved a further
seven-tenths off his time. Also in the first group out for qualifying Sunday,
Matteus was the fifth quickest in the group and ultimately 17th in the field,
his best performance to date. On track for the prefinal he bettered his 58.603
second qualifying lap to a 57.528 second fast lap in crossing 20th, and in the
main event he advanced to 18th.
Through two of three rounds in the 2007 Tour,
both Julius and Matteus have completed every qualifying, prefinal, and main
event without incident. They will return to Florida with the Cameron Motorsports/CRG
National Team March 23rd to complete their first Series of the season.
