Team News:  Makos Motorsports - BSRKC Round 3 Report
July 11, 2007

It was two more podiums and no broken bones for Makos Motorsports over the weekend as the team competed in the Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship presented by MG Tires. At Kawartha Speedway for race three of the six race series, Julius raced Junior Light and Medium while younger brother Matteus lined up in Cadet and Novice.

Julius was in action first as he took to the track Saturday in Junior Medium. Putting a full day of Friday practice to good use he qualified solidly and battled at the front in the prefinal, lining up for the main event on row two. What followed was a great battle in which Makos sat in fourth, third, second and first at different stages! As the white flag flew for one to go, Julius fell to third, yet closed in on second running through the infield stretch. He moved to the bumper in a straight line, then ran an incredible outside line around the right-hander leading into the left hand final hairpin where he took second. It was a great move and a great run, his first tasting unrestricted power.

Sunday was Junior Light where Makos entered sitting second in points, just five back of the championship lead. Once again morning practice went well but qualifying was a disaster as Julius clocked 1.6 seconds off the pole pace! After a quick pep talk in the pit, he grabbed three positions at the start of the prefinal and picked his way to fourth by the final flag, earning a spot on row two for the main event. The outside line produced a great run at the start and Makos was immediately second. He then pushed the leader over the course of the race, working to the white flag. He tried to repeat his last lap move from a day earlier but came up just short. He then went for the win drag race style to the line but came up 0.134 seconds shy, earning his second podium of the weekend. The points gained from the second strong run move Julius to the championship lead heading to round four.

Eight-year-old Matteus began Sunday in blinding fashion, a day that would see him on track twice. He began by taking the Cadet pole position by over a half second, then walked clear in the prefinal as well. On his way to doing the same in the main event, the young charge was forced to retire after his axle shifted, putting the brakes on a winning run. Returning in Novice, Makos qualified fifth, then passed into third at the start of the prefinal. He was leading a 3-4-5 train set on running down the lead pair when once again he was forced to retire. This time the motor let go on the long Kawartha Speedway straight, and Matteus would have to start the main from the back of the pack running an emergency motor that just wasn’t up to the task. On the positive side, a brace created to support broken arm #2 worked very well and Matteus was pain free throughout the weekend.

Looking ahead, the boys will be in action at the Toronto Kart Club Hershey Centre Grand Prix in two weeks, the track where Matteus scored his first career win one year ago. One week later Julius returns to Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship at Mosport Karting, then the team brings in August by racing for the ‘Bear’ and the BSRKC Shannonville round.

Makos Motorsports races with support from Roadrunner Engines, Asset Engineering, Maple Leaf Consumer Foods, Classic Cuisine, Low Risk Transportation, K-Line Maintenance and Construction and Makos Promotions.
