Team News: Makos Motorsports, Florida
Winter Tour
Rounds 5 & 6
March 23, 2007
Last weekend in Ocala,
Florida, was a breakout one for Makos Motorsports as Julius Makos not only met a
personal goal of cracking the top ten in International competition - he climbed
the podium! Group B was concluding its schedule of the Florida Winter Tour and
the team certainly went out on a high note.
Saturday morning warmup saw the youngster from
Richmond Hill, Ontario, clock in at his highest position to date in 12th, but
shortly after he was in the thick of the hunt as he put his Cameron Motorsports/CRG
on the outside of row three with a 42.983 second lap. Maintaining the position
though the prefinal and shaving another three-tenths of his fastest lap, Julius
was charged up for a great run in the main. It took just five laps for him to
reach third, and through ten of eighteen laps he had carved his way to second,
where he began utilizing draft passing with two other drivers. The trio swapped
positions two, three, and four on every pass down the Ocala straight and with
two laps to go Julius was fourth. He moved to third racing under the white flag
to begin the final lap, and a bid for second came up just short in a run out of
the final corner.
Packed full of new confidence beginning Sunday,
Julius promptly put his kart P4 in qualifying and maintained his spot in the
prefinal once again. Working in the second half of the main event with US
National Mini-Max Champion Nick Neri, the pair pushed toward the lead pair in
looking to settle the podium. In the end, Julius was fourth, missing his second
consecutive podium by just 1/100th of a second! The great results vaulted Makos
from 15th to 7th in overall points, a fabulous finish in his first Florida
Winter Tour.
While Julius gained confidence to run at the
front in Ocala, younger brother Matteus Makos continued to gain experience in
International competition. Showing consistency beyond his seven years on
Saturday, his fast times from qualifying to prefinal and final varied by just
4/100th of a second! Over six on-track sessions through two race days, Matteus
turned a fast lap of 44.3 seconds four times. He is sure to be a future force in
his FIVE remaining years of Cadet!
With the conclusion of the Winter Tour, both
Julius and Matteus would like to thank Mike Roth, Trevor Wickens, and the rest
of the Cameron Motorsports/CRG National Team for all their guidance and
assistance in Florida. The adventure was a fantastic one.
