Driver News:  Julius Makos, SRFKC
May 30, 2007

After what was beginning to feel like an eternity in the trenches, Julius Makos made his return to a regional podium over the weekend for the first time since standing tall at the final round of the Florida Winter Tour. Racing with a variety of Series since wrapping up in Ocala, Makos has scored club podiums but been snake bitten in major Cadet, Junior Light, and F1-K competition. Yet all that became ancient history Sunday when he crossed third in Hamilton at the second round of the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship.

As well as the weekend closed, it opened in what had become a frustrating pattern. Makos Motorsports arrived in Hamilton Thursday and practised all day Friday with no mechanical issues. Yet when F1-K race action began Saturday the gremlins were back at work. After bogging throughout morning practice the motor was overhauled - to no avail - and a new unit was installed for the prefinal. After running great on the stand, similar problems surfaced on track before yet another motor was installed, this one on loan from a fellow competitor. Once again the engine was on tune when on the stand, but didn’t deliver on the track. The team waved its driver in from the final and settled on retirement and a classification of eleventh.

Sunday was a much different tale and a story with a much better ending. Despite skipping morning warmup as Mother Nature determined the weather for the day, Makos qualified fifth of fifteen karts in Canada Junior Light. Positives continued in the prefinal when the young charge kept his fifth to take an inside line for the main event. Makos then had a great start in the final as he jumped to third through turn one and began a race long battle for the final podium position. Though the leaders escaped, Julius drafted with a partner through the middle stages and sealed a podium spot in the closing laps.

Makos Motorsports would like to sincerely thank Trevor Wickens and Mike Roth of Cameron Motorsports who went over and beyond the call of duty in helping the team in Hamilton, as well as fellow F1-K competitors who offered assistance during a troubling Saturday. The team will be back in action this coming weekend with a Toronto Kart Club race Saturday and the first round of the Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship on Sunday.
